‘Omar’ is a 16’ Orkney Longliner with a 6HP Mariner 4 Stroke outboard engine. Petrol can be obtained at the garage opposite The Harris Hotel in Tarbert. Petrol tanks are either in our shed at Strome Cottage or in the boat; similarly the oars and rowlocks.
Cost
There is a charge of £50/week for the use of Omar. When booking please confirm whether you wish to include use of the boat in your reservation.
Fishing Tackle to Take
You are most welcome to use any gear found in the shed such as lobster pots and long lines, darrows (hooks with dyed feathers for catching mackerel). If you intend to do quite a bit of fishing it is a good idea to bring your own rod, or long hand lines and spinners. The Fisherman’s Co-op in Stornoway has a large collection of tackle for every kind of fishing.
Please Remember
Please be aware that using the boat in the seas around Scalpay is not for the inexperienced.
Always make sure you take the petrol tanks
It is also advisable to bring your own lifejackets, although we have several in the hallway of the cottage, which you are welcome to use.
Please make sure the boat is properly secured to the pontoon when returning to berth 36 in the North Harbour.
There are rocks everywhere, many hidden beneath the surface except at low tide! Finally, the boat cannot be insured for holiday visitors, so use is entirely at the risk of the user and /or his/her party, and consequently a disclaimer has to be signed if visitors wish to make use of the boat.
